Be Someone's Hero - Michael Alfred Stowers

Quote

Example is not the main thing in influencing others. It is the only thing.
Albert Schweitzer

Real Life

About 20 years ago New Zealand Samoan, Michael Alfred Stowers, was volunteering at an Ironman’s event in Auckland.

As he watched lots of “skinny, fast fellas” powering past his post, he saw a couple of Pacific Islander competitors. For Stowers, to see someone of his own race and with a similar build competing in that event, enabled him to believe that he could too. That started him on his own Ironman journey. He has since completed 15 Ironman triathlons, each consisting of a 3.9 km swim, 180 km bike and 42 km run. He admits to not being one of the fastest competitors out there, but for him. “finishing is winning”. This year he will take part in the ultimate Ironman event at Kona, Hawaii, renowned for its tough conditions.

Stowers is aware that it was through seeing a Pacific Islander competing in the Ironman all those years ago, that helped him to have the courage and belief to try it for himself. He knows that weight related health problems are a big issue for Islanders and he wants to model a different way. Now in his fifties, his motivation is to demonstrate that sport is not only for youngsters and that even the big island build can compete in long distance events. Stowers’ motivation for doing Ironman events has always been about more than himself. He knows that seeing someone we can relate to doing something we admire or respect can be a powerful motivator. He wants to be that inspiration to his community.

It is important for us all to be aware that the way we live our lives can influence others. The bible encourages us to use that power of influence for good; to set an example that inspires others to make good decisions and to live a good life. If we have the courage to step up to that challenge and take on the mantel of a role model, we have the potential to make a significant difference in the lives of others.

Bible Verse

In all things show yourself an example in good deeds.
Titus 2:7

Prayer
Lord thank You for the opportunity to be a positive influence on others. Please remind me that I have this potential in me and help me to courageously use that potential for good.
