Quiet Humility - Sidney Crosby

Quote

"Humility is not thinking less of yourself, it’s thinking of yourself less.”
C.S. Lewis

Real Life

Sidney Crosby, the centre for the Pittsburgh Penguins NHL team, is a standout example of humility and selflessness. As captain for the Pens, Crosby’s ice hockey skills, work ethic, and smart play have brought him three NHL Championship wins and two Olympic medals.

Fans admire Sidney Crosby not just for his exceptional talent on the ice, but also for his grounded and modest behaviour away from the rink. Even though Sidney Crosby is a famous and successful ice hockey player, he keeps his personal life private and prefers being humble. He has made a conscious decision to stay off social media, which helps keep him grounded and focused on the game. By avoiding the constant spotlight and attention that comes with being online, he makes sure his fame doesn’t go to his head. He’s also known for quietly giving back. Crosby helps many charities and stays connected to his hometown, Cole Harbour, Nova Scotia. He supports local ice hockey, gives equipment, and aids community projects quietly, keeping his heart in the right place.

Crosby’s ability to display the same humility on the ice is admirable. In interviews, he is consistently well-spoken and gracious. He's quick to turn attention away from himself and point out his teammates' contributions. He understands that success in ice hockey is a team effort and never seeks to elevate himself above others. Many people who've followed Crosby's career say he has never spoken unkindly or disrespectfully about other players, coaches, or even challenging fans.

Humility is about putting others before you, seeing their needs as important, treating them with respect, and acknowledging that you don't have all the answers and might need help too. It’s about letting go of pride and selfishness, and choosing to serve, support, and value the people around us. The Bible talks a lot about humility and selflessness, but one example that stands out is Philippians 2:3-8. This passage challenges us to think less about our own status and more about how we can lift others up. It calls believers to a mindset where others are seen not just as equals, but as people worth honouring and prioritising. It’s about shifting the focus away from ourselves and toward a life of love, empathy, and service.

What makes this passage even more meaningful is that it points to Jesus as the ultimate example. Though he had every reason to claim status and glory, he chose humility, serving others, even to the point of sacrificing his life. That’s the kind of humility Philippians highlights - not just a quiet attitude but living in such a way that puts others first.

Bible Verse

Do nothing from selfish ambition or conceit, but in humility count others more significant than yourselves. Let each of you look not only to his own interests, but also to the interests of others.

Philippians 2:3-8

Prayer

Lord, thank you for sending a perfect example of humility and service in Jesus Christ. Help me to consider this example, and actively live in a way that puts others first.
